Investigating the capacity of hydroponic system using lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) in the removal of pollutants from greywater while ensuring food security

The study aims to investigate the removal of nutrients, organic pollutants and fecal bacteria from greywater while evaluating growth yields lettuce using hydroponic system. Lettuces grow in systems irrigated with untreated greywater, fresh well water, separately. Nutrients, pollutants, dishwashing were monitored. Agronomical microbiological parameters investigated. results showed that efficiencies forammonia (NH4+), nitrate (NO3-), total phosphorus (TP) 78 %, 87 % 56 respectively. higher than 50% for Total Suspended Solids (TSS), 5-days Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5) Chemical (COD). are 88.68 81.94 E. coli, coliforms, not observed leaves. Besides, lettuces produced biomass ones water. system could be an alternative treatment ensuring food security.
